Rubber handle grips add the finishing touch to a pair of wooden sculls. Without them the handles are normally left the traditional barrel shape but, for the experienced sculler the preference would always be for grips. The wooden handle of the oar is reduced in diameter to 1” at the end swelling to 1-1/8” at the shoulder. The wood is varnished with the rest of the oar and to fit the grips, a coat of wet varnish is applied just to the handles and in one motion, the rubber grip is forced on over the varnish, up to meet the shoulder. Once the varnish dries, the grip is secure and ready to use.
